STAC trail running: combatting seasonal depression in vulnerable youth
Many of our youth participants face barriers such as social isolation, limited access to recreation, and a lack of positive role models. Through group-based trail runs, mentorship, and teamwork activities, the program helps youth build confidence, belonging, and resilience.
Running outdoors together fosters communication, trust, and mutual encouragement—key elements that reduce feelings of loneliness and disconnection. Participants learn to set personal goals, celebrate collective achievements, and engage with caring mentors who model leadership and perseverance. Beyond fitness, the trails become a space for youth to experience community, friendship, and emotional support, helping them feel seen, valued, and part of something larger than themselves.
Our Trail Running program targets youth in The City of Hamilton, ON who range in age from 5 years old- 19 years old and who are poorly integrated into their communities. The youth embark on an hour- 2 hour long run consisting of about 10 kilometres along the designated trail at their own pace with the rest of the community group.
STAC hosts 4 structured trail races throughout the year that youth and adults can sign-up for. Our trail races range from 5k-50k in distance.
